Linking (File): How to create a link (hyperlink or URL) to one of your files
|
Before you can link to a file, the folder which contains the file you wish to link to, must be shared publicly. You can tell
if a folder is shared publicly if it has a world (or globe) icon on the folder. If the folder is not shared publicly, select
the folder and then click the 'Sharing' button. In the sharing dialog, give the 'Public' group view and/or download
access to the folder.
Next, select the file to which you want to create a link. What we mean by select is to actually click on the file so that
the display is no longer in 'thumbnail' view. Near the top, you will see a line that reads 'Address.'
If you click the button to the right of the 'Address' line, it will copy the URL (link) to that particular file. You can paste
that URL into eBay, Facebook, email it to someone, or use it in one of your web pages. Any file type can be linked to
(.zip, .exe, .jpg, .mp3, etc.).
Linking is true 'public' sharing. If you would like a more private, community-based sharing, see below. For sharing, everyone who
shares the folder must be a member of MyOtherDrive.com.

In the sharing dialog, give the 'Public' group view and/or download access to the folder.

not the file. Near the top, you will see a line that reads 'Address.'
If you click the button to the right of the 'Address' line, it will copy the URL (link) to that particular folder. You can paste
that URL into an email and share a nice HTML page containing all the pictures, music, or movie files in that folder.

Sharing: Allowing a controlled group of others (a community) to view some of your folders.
|
First, create a group (community) or a set of groups. Click the 'Groups' button and use the Add group button in the Groups
window to add groups.
At this point, just create your groups - we do not recommend you do your sharing here as it is easier
to do from the tree view in the main screen. Example groups or communities: co-workers, family, friends, bowling, softball, volleyball, etc.
Next you need to add friends to your Friend list. This is done by clicking the "Friends" button. That will bring up the 'Friends' window.
Here, choose the Invite button to invite new friends that are not already in your friend's list.
Invites will be emailed to your friends who are not MyOtherDrive.com members, asking them to join. If they already are a member, the
email will inform them that you have invited them as a friend.
While in the friends dialog, add each friend to at least one group (or groups - a friend can be in as many groups as needed). At this
point, you have built your 'Social Network.' You have your friends listed, and you have categorized them into groups (communities).
The next thing to do, is to share folders with these groups (communities). To do this, click the 'Share' button to bring up the Sharing window.
In this Sharing window, select the permissions you would like to give to a group. In the window pictured above, view and download
permissions are being given to the friends group. To make a folder public, give view and download to the Public group. If
you want to permissions to be assigned to all subfolders the same way, check the "Change Sub-directories" check box.

Friends: Viewing your friends shared folders
|
Select the friend from the Friend drop-down list at the top:
When you select a friend from this list, you will see all the files that are shared to you. Since folders are shared to groups and not
directly friends, you are seeing all the folders for all the groups you are a member in, for this specific friend. This community level
sharing is unique to MyOtherDrive.com and permits a group of related friends to share files, without everyone in the world having access,
just the community they consider themselves part of.

Upload: Sending files from your computer to www.MyOtherDrive.com
|
To upload files or groups of folders, first select the folder on the MyOtherDrive site that you wish the folders to go into. If there
is no folder yet, then create one. Next, select the 'Upload' option. It will first bring up a "Folder Browser" window. From this
window, select the files and folders from your computer that you wish to upload. You can select more than one folder at a time - hold
down the control key when clicking to select folders.
Next, the Upload options window will come up.
In this window, it displays the number of files and folders selected, the amount of data to be sent (in Megabytes). Choose the option that
best matches your desire in terms of what to do if a file already exists on both ends. The default (top) option will overwrite the file
on the MyOtherDrive.com server when with a matching file from your computer, if the one on your computer is different. The second option will
only overwrite the file on the MyOtherDrive.com server always, even if they are the same size and have same contents. The third option will skip
sending the file when there is a file on both your local computer and the MyOtherDrive.com server with the same name in the same folder.
If you wish to reselect the files on your computer to upload, click the "Reselect files" button.
Finally, to start the upload process, click the "Start" button. Upload is recursive. This means that for every folder encountered, if there
are subfolders within, those folders will be uploaded and created on MyOtherDrive.com, and so on.

Download: Sending files from www.MyOtherDrive.com to your computer.
|
To download files, first select the folder on the MyOtherDrive site that you wish to transfer to your computer. Next, select the 'Download'
(or Save As) option. Use Save As for a single file. A "Folder Browser" window will pop up. From this window, select the folder on your
computer that you wish to download the files into.
IMPORTANT: Make sure not to type a file name into the Folder Browser dialog box that
comes up. All you are doing here is selecting a folder on your local computer. Once the folder is selected, click the Download button
on the Folder browser window. The files from the selected folder on MyOtherDrive.com will be copied to the folder you selected on your
computer. At this point in time, only one folder at a time can be downloaded. In a future update, this too will be recursive like upload.
